| Green Tea Weight Loss: Is green tea any good for weight loss? |

By Claudia S Ohst How can green tea help losing weight and how big is the effect at all?
Well, there seems to be consensus that drinking 3-5 cups green tea per day will increase your body's heat production, called thermogenesis. This is the same effect that eating cayenne pepper will have, which is also said to help in weight loss. However, for green tea it seems that the increased heat production will continue for about 24 hours while cayenne pepper rather gives your metabolism a boost and then the effect fades. Although neither green tea nor anything else for that matter is a weight loss miracle cure, there is at least some truth in green tea being helpful for slimming down. The facts are: Drinking green tea will boost your metabolism by about 2-4%, depending on which study you look at. If you an average woman and need about 2000 calories for maintenance, that is your extra 40-80 calories burned per day. Well, anything extra helps and it is better than nothing. The main cause for the metabolic slimming effect of green tea are the ingredients caffeine and EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). So when you are currently drinking some cups of coffee per day it might not make much difference in boosting your metabolism when you switch to green tea. However, other research found that caffeine and EGCG work synergistically together, so you will get a greater effect on your metabolism for less caffeine. This is some good news for those who are sensitive towards caffeine or are trying to avoid caffeine for health reasons. But still, the overall effect of 40-80 extra calories burned is comparably small for drinking green tea. The only really effective method to burn a lot extra calories is exercise, and not sitting on your couch and sipping green tea!
